AI Governance: Definition & Explanation
AI Governance refers to the management structures, rules, and processes that ensure the appropriate development, deployment, and operation of AI systems within organizations and society. It translates AI ethics principles into practical organizational management, encompassing risk management, quality assurance, compliance, auditing, and accountability mechanisms. The EU's AI Act (enacted 2024) is the world's first comprehensive AI regulation, classifying and regulating AI systems based on risk levels. In Japan, guidelines have been developed by METI and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Organizations are expected to establish AI usage policies, implement AI risk assessment processes, provide employee AI literacy training, and prepare incident response plans. As AI adoption accelerates, the importance of governance is expected to grow even further.
