What is Image Denoising?
TL;DR
Processing where AI removes graininess and color noise from a photo to make it smooth and clean. Used to improve low-light and high-ISO photos.
Image Denoising: Definition & Explanation
Image denoising is processing that removes grainy luminance noise, color noise (uneven color), and JPEG block artifacts from a photo to produce a smooth, clean image. Traditional filtering tended to blur fine detail along with the noise, but AI denoising can selectively remove only the noise while preserving detail, based on patterns learned from many images. It's widely used to improve photos taken in dark places, graininess from high ISO (high sensitivity), and old camera images, and in AI upscaling tools it's commonly done together with enlargement. A caveat: applying denoising too strongly can wipe out natural textures like skin and fabric, producing a flat, unnatural result, so it's important to adjust the strength moderately.
