What is Latent Space?

TL;DR

A high-dimensional internal space where AI models represent the essential features of data in compressed form.

Latent Space: Definition & Explanation

Latent space is an internal mathematical space where AI models represent the essential features and structures of data in compressed form. Stable Diffusion, an image generation AI, uses a Latent Diffusion Model that encodes images into a low-dimensional latent space, performs denoising within that space, and then decodes back into images. In latent space, semantically similar concepts are positioned near each other, so movement within the space corresponds to changes in image features (e.g., smiling to neutral, day to night). Latent space is also a central concept in VAEs (Variational Autoencoders) and GANs, used for data generation, interpolation, and transformation.
