What is Deep Learning?

TL;DR

A machine learning approach using multi-layered neural networks. The core technology driving modern AI.

Deep Learning: Definition & Explanation

Deep Learning is a machine learning methodology that uses multi-layered neural networks to automatically learn patterns from data. Inspired by the structure of the human brain's neural circuits, these networks consist of input layers, multiple hidden layers, and output layers. Beginning around 2012, deep learning brought revolutionary improvements to image recognition, and has since been applied across natural language processing, speech recognition, gaming, autonomous driving, and many other domains. Virtually all current AI technologies — including LLMs, Transformers, and diffusion models — are built on deep learning. Large datasets and high-speed GPU computation have been key drivers of performance gains, with specialized hardware like TPUs also being developed. As the foundational technology of the entire AI industry, deep learning continues to evolve rapidly.
